China's July trade rises 19.2% in yuan as high-tech exports surge
China's General Administration of Customs reported on August 7 that July foreign trade turnover reached 4.66 trillion yuan (roughly $686.26 billion), up 19.2% year-on-year. Exports rose 17.8% and imports 21.2%, marking the fifth consecutive month above 4 trillion yuan (gov.cn). For January–July, total goods trade came to 30.13 trillion yuan, up 17.3% year-on-year.
In dollar terms the growth rates are higher: exports climbed 23.9% and imports 27.5% in July, while the trade surplus widened to $112.5 billion — down from June's $125.62 billion but above the $107 billion forecast (FXStreet). The gap between yuan- and dollar-denominated growth rates likely reflects, at least in part, yuan-dollar exchange rate movements over the past year.
High-tech and machinery drive the export surge
High-tech products led July's export acceleration: shipments of industrial robots and 3D printers surged over 50% year-on-year, and high-tech goods accounted for roughly 60% of the monthly export increase (gov.cn). In dollar terms, overall high-tech exports expanded 40.7% in July, with semiconductor shipments nearly doubling in value, according to China-Global South Project (China-Global South Project).
For January–July, exports of mechanical and electrical products reached 11.12 trillion yuan, up 21.2% and accounting for 63.8% of total exports — within that, electric vehicle exports jumped 71.2% and lithium battery exports 35.8%. Imports of machinery and electronics also grew fast, to 5.31 trillion yuan (up 29.7%, 41.9% of total imports), as China keeps sourcing components and equipment even while ramping up domestic output (gov.cn).
Shifting trade geography and ownership structure
Among trading partners over the first seven months, trade with APEC economies grew fastest at 21%, followed by ASEAN at 20%, Africa at 18.9%, and Belt and Road partners at 15.5%. Trade with the EU rose 9.5% and with Latin America 15.4%. The exception is the United States, where January–July trade turnover fell 1.6%, though the decline narrowed by 2 percentage points compared with the first six months of the year (gov.cn).
Private enterprises accounted for 17.16 trillion yuan, or 56.9% of trade turnover for January–July (up 17.2%); foreign-invested firms grew 17.6% and state-owned enterprises 17.3%.
What it means for buyers and commodity suppliers
For companies sourcing equipment, robotics and electronics from China, double-digit growth in the high-tech export segment points to heavy utilization of manufacturing and port capacity — worth factoring into lead-time planning and freight bookings over the coming months. Signals for commodity suppliers into China are mixed: energy imports fell over January–July, with natural gas down 3% and crude oil down 13.2%, while imports of machinery and components accelerated by nearly a third (China-Global South Project). January–July trade with the US remains negative, though the decline narrowed by 2 percentage points versus the first half of the year — participants in China-US supply chains should watch whether this easing continues in coming months.
